Vinyl vs Screen Printing
VINYL
Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) is a speciality polyurethane with a heat-activated adhesive (typically polyester-based) that is flexible and can be used on certain fabrics and materials.
With HTV, your design is cut from a sheet of backed vinyl and the negative of the design needs to be removed by a process called weeding. With weeding, all the little nooks and crannies in your art need to be manually removed from the backing.
Heat transfer vinyl is a thin vinyl material used to feed into a piece of equipment, known as a cutter, to cut out and create designs which are then heat applied onto shirts using a heat press machine.
SCREEN PRINT
Plastisol is the standard ink for screen printing. It is made with polyvinyl chloride. This type of ink sits on top of the shirt; it doesn't soak in. Plastisol is also heat applied to the fabric.
DIFFERENCE & QUALITY
The heat transfer vinyl and the plastisol transfers can look and feel very similar. With HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) the colour changing feature is limited to its colours available. Screen printing offers the finished decorations in fully colour changing ability and this technique is great for illustrations as well as large and complex logos.
If you want a more realistic and softer look, screen printing is the way to go!
